How the Internet Improved My Life

by | Apr 23, 2012

As nerdy as the title of this post might sound, there’s no denying, the internet has done heaps of improvements in our lives and most of us enjoy the privilege of being online everyday. Though there are days I’m amazed by how I lived way before the internet was available to all of us and the fact that I relished all the times I was "disconnected", I know the internet is one of the technologies I’m so grateful for.

The internet...

I bet anyone who reads this would agree with me on this. I wanted to share some of the benefits of being online that I currently enjoy. Feel free to add yours through the comments section:

Re-uniting with long-lost friends and acquaintances.

The internet, Facebook in particular, helped me reconnect with relatives and friends from college, companies I worked for, and schoolmates. This doesn’t mean we’re closer or we rekindled the friendship or whatever kind of relationship we had back in the days, but at least, I get to see how everyone’s lives have been progressing.

I can work at the comforts of my own home.

I no longer have to suffer from hours upon hours of heavy, crazy traffic to commute to and from work. Those hours now are well-spent. Instead of wasting 4 hours (2 hours each way, if I’m lucky) on the road, I can relax, bond with my family over breakfast, or go out without feeling so restless and tired from work.

I can find out about almost anything (and even anyone) online.

Though I used to be a bookworm and I enjoy reading at the library, in fact I was even VP of our Booklovers’ Club back in high school (what a nerd 😀 ), I can’t help but be amazed by the vast resource of knowledge that’s available to all of us over the web.

Whatever topic you need more information on, may it be about arts (movie schedules, etc), music (concerts, videos, etc), technology, history, fashion, beauty tips, product reviews, health, smart choices in products (e.g,, learning the side effects of medicines through sites like http://www.dietpillsideeffects.com/phenteripped/), etc.

Sharing photos and my interests with friends and like-minded people.

Through Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and my blogs, I get to share my life, my experiences and lessons I learned with other people. I also enjoy sharing photos with my friends, especially of food. It’s for the same reason I relish over the fact that I can live vicariously through someone else’s experiences. I’ve got my favorite travel blogs and food blogs from here and abroad. I get to dream about going to a certain place because someone in my network shared his/her experience with photos to match. It makes me more determined to fulfill that dream, having read others’ account of how worth it the trip was. 🙂

Dating before the internet

Meeting new people online – another benefit of the internet.

Online shopping.

Though I enjoy going to the mall to shop, I cannot deny how convenient and fun online shopping can be. I had control over my shopping addiction a few years back, and I think I let it control me for a bit when I started shopping online again a few months ago. I mean, how can you not shop online?

To be honest, I HATE it when salespeople follow me around their store, asking me if I need assistance. I’ll ask you if I have a question. When I enter a store and someone immediately entertains or assists me, I go straight out the door, unless I have something I really want from them. It’s not that I feel like they don’t trust me or they don’t think I know what I need. I just don’t like people crowding or invading my space when it’s not necessary. 😀 I prefer to browse and only get approached when I need help.

That’s why online shopping works for me. I get to research on a product that interest me before I click on the BUY button. No pesky sales clerks. 😀

Also, I love that I can purchase plane tickets online. 🙂

Yeah, you can give reasons to protest every point or advantage I mentioned here, but see, this post is about how the internet has helped improve my life. There’s always a bad side to everything, so it’s up to you if you want to focus on the negative side of things, or just bask in the convenience the internet has provided us all. 😉
