Determining Which Kind of Coaxial Cable Is Best for Your Home

by | Sep 28, 2012

If it is not one thing, it is always something else. It always seems that there is something a little better hiding right around the corner. Even the cables that bring your cable television service into your home are changing. There are thousands of miles of this cable installed all over the United States. The most common type of cable that people are using for this purpose is a digital coaxial cable. If you want to get technical about it, it is called an RG59 cable. This is that black or white cable that has silver screw-on adapters on the end. One end of this cable will usually plug into your cable TV service, and the other end will plug into your television. This cable sends all of the data from the cable TV service to your entertainment center. This cable works fine, but technology has created a demand for a better cable.

High definition television and high definition audio require a lot of bandwidth. As the picture gets better, and the sound gets better, the cable needs more room for all of this data to travel. That is where a newer cable comes in. A newer style cable means more bandwidth. It means brighter clearer pictures, better sound and even 3D possibilities. This new cable is considered an upgrade, and it is called RG6 coaxial cable. It works exactly the same as the older cable. The only difference is inside the cable itself.

Physically looking at these two cables side by side can make it difficult to tell which one is which. The key is to look at the cable packaging. The packaging of the cable should clearly state which type of cable is inside the package. Some of the cable itself will likely be labeled as well.

Do you need to change all the coaxial cable in your home?

The answer to this question really depends on your high definition programming needs. 3D television is still in its infancy. Many households all over the United States still do not have 3D televisions. Choosing whether or not this type of cable is necessary is really just a matter of personal preference. If your house is currently wired with an older style coaxial cable, then it might be a good choice to just leave it. If you have noticed that your picture and audio quality just don’t seem to be that good, then you might want to change out the cable.
