Jack of All Trades, A Mistress of None

by | May 8, 2012

I’m a frustrated graphics designer. I’ve always wanted to hone my skills in design, but for the past decade, I’ve been given opportunities to focus on my other skills that I neglected the designer side of me. This year, I vow to put my designer hat on more often, so I can satisfy the creative in me.

In the past year, I’ve designed blogs, banners, flyers, invitations, and websites. The satisfaction of seeing the result of my hard work is precious. I’m a very visual person and I have a very wild imagination, exactly the reasons why I wanted to pursue being a designer right after college. So, I learned how to use Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, Illustrator, and other programs for graphics design, all by myself. And I miss working on major projects ’cause now, I’ve been so committed to my passion for writing / blogging and photography.

I have my sub-domain already setup for my portfolio as a graphics designer – http://design.blankpixels.com. It’s still under construction, of course, and I’ve got a ton of things listed on my to-do list that designing or completing my own portfolio site may take me ’til next year to accomplish. *sigh* But, what can I do?

It’s frustrating to think that I’m a jack of all trades, a master of none. I know, some may disagree and say I’m very good with a lot of things, but I need to focus on just one thing and be completely successful and excellent with it. It’ll be hard to choose between writing and design though.

Because my current laptop sucks ( I can’t even play Diablo 3 here boohooo 🙁 ), I need to save up to buy me a new one. I’m planning on buying a Macbook since my IT friends are all telling me it’ll be best to use a Mac for what I’m planning to do in the near future. I wish there are coupons or discounts that’ll be offered to me so I can buy one now. 😀

For now, I need to really focus to get things done. I’ve got some major planning to do, and I’m hoping everything will fall into place so I can get my head together and do something I’ve been wanting to do for the longest time.
